Report: Volkswagen will not build full diesel-electric hybrids.Vw Up! Lite ConceptAlthough many car manufacturers such as PSA Peugeot Citroen are considering building full diesel-electric hybrids, it appears that Volkswagen doesn’t think that this is a good idea.

“Diesel hybrids still don’t make good business sense. The higher cost of clean diesel technology would make them even more expensive than petrol-electric cars. The markets where hybrids are most popular are also the ones where diesels are least popular.” said a VW spokesman. These words confirm that the Volkswagen Up! Lite will remain just a concept. For those who don’t know, the Up! Lite Concept was powered by an 800cc, twin-cylinder common-rail diesel engine producing 50 hp at 4,000rpm and 88 lb ft of torque.
